Filmustage includes AI Dude, a built-in production assistant that works across your entire project. It can reorganize your shooting schedule based on constraints, generate scene synopses, run VFX analyses, answer questions about your breakdown data, and create VFX bidding packages — all from a natural-language conversation inside your project. You can also upload additional files — location agreements, production notes, research materials — to give AI Dude more context.

Yamdu does not offer an equivalent AI production agent.

Automatic AI Script Breakdown: Production-Ready vs. Assisted

Filmustage's automatic AI script breakdown has been the core of the platform since launch. It processes a full script in seconds, identifies all standard production categories, and handles non-standard formats and multi-language scripts. The results are ready to review and edit immediately.

Yamdu added AI-assisted breakdown in beta in late 2025. It detects characters and locations from your imported script and produces suggestions that your creative departments then confirm and populate by hand. Yamdu has since broadened its AI set with synopsis and one-liner generation. These remain assistive, beta-stage features built around the principle that the user confirms each step — not a one-click full auto-breakdown.

AI Scheduling Assistant and Visual Calendar

Once your script is broken down in Filmustage, the AI Scheduling Assistant reorganizes scenes around your production constraints — grouping by location, cast availability, shooting days, and more — and you refine the result in a visual calendar that shows the whole shoot at a glance.

Yamdu has a strong manual stripboard, a production Gantt chart, and a unified production calendar, and it can import Movie Magic schedules. It does not include an AI scheduling assistant or automated conflict resolution.

AI Budgeting, Global Formulas, and Movie Magic Export

Filmustage generates an initial budget from your breakdown data automatically. You can adjust parameters, apply fringes and deductions with global formulas, set a maximum project budget, and move budgets both ways with Movie Magic Budgeting — importing existing .mmbx files and exporting to Movie Magic Budgeting 10 (MMB10). Budgets also export to XLSX. Among AI-first breakdown tools, this two-way Movie Magic Budgeting interchange is rare — most tools stop at a spreadsheet export.

Yamdu's native budgeting, Dynamic Globals®, links your shooting and production schedules to the budget and is now a live part of the platform. Its primary external handoff is Showbiz Budgeting import/export. Yamdu does not offer Movie Magic Budgeting (MMB10) import or export.

VFX Breakdown and Autodesk Flow Export

Filmustage includes a dedicated VFX breakdown module to tag, categorize, and analyze all visual-effects work, with results exported directly to Autodesk Flow Production Tracking (formerly ShotGrid) — the industry-standard VFX pipeline tool. AI Dude can also generate VFX bidding packages from your breakdown data.

Yamdu does not include VFX-specific breakdown tools or an Autodesk Flow integration.

AI Storyboards and Visual References

Both platforms support 2D visual references — photos, mood boards, and reference images attached to scenes and elements.

Filmustage goes further with AI-generated storyboards and AI-generated visual references: based on your scene descriptions it creates visual representations and reference images directly inside your project, and you can name cast members in the prompt so references reflect the actual actors attached to your production. Yamdu supports shot lists and manual storyboards, but does not generate them with AI.

Content Protection

Filmustage includes Content Protection — a forensic, per-viewer watermark applied to PDF exports and the on-screen view, plus PDF locking (block editing and copying, or require a password to open). Owners set it as a team-wide default and override it per project or per collaborator, so a leaked page traces back to a specific person.

Yamdu offers bulk watermarking on files distributed through its Distribution hub — useful for batch-protecting documents sent to crew, though applied at distribution rather than as a per-viewer forensic mark.

Where Yamdu Is Strong

Yamdu covers more of the production lifecycle than Filmustage, and for some teams that breadth is the deciding factor. It includes Smart Time Cards with labor-agreement rule sets and pre-payroll export, Travel Management for cast and crew logistics and cost tracking, CO₂e / sustainability tracking with industry carbon calculators, and a secure Distribution hub for project files. It runs multi-episode and series productions through a dedicated episodic feature set (a paid PRO add-on), keeps data in the EU on Microsoft Azure, and exposes a MovieLabs OMC-based API for interoperability. If you need one system to run an entire production — not just the path from script to budget — Yamdu's all-in-one model is a genuine strength.

Security & Compliance

Filmustage holds SOC 2 Type 2 compliance — an independent auditor has reviewed our systems over several months to confirm consistent, rigorous data-protection controls — and a TPN Blue Shield, confirming we meet the MPA Content Security Best Practices for protecting pre-release and production assets. All AI processing runs under official no-training agreements with all AI providers, so your scripts are never used to train AI models. Enterprise clients can also operate Filmustage using their own API keys for full data governance. All policies and reports are in the Filmustage Trust Center.

Yamdu displays ISO 27001 and ISO 27018 badges, is a TPN member, is GDPR compliant, and hosts data in the EU on Microsoft Azure. It does not publicly claim SOC 2 or a specific TPN shield tier.

Both platforms take security seriously. The right choice depends on your compliance requirements — TPN Blue Shield and SOC 2 Type 2 are typically required by major US studios and streamers, while ISO 27001 and EU data residency are the more common standards for European productions.

Any Script Format, Out of the Box

Most breakdown tools expect a properly formatted screenplay — standard scene headings, clean slug lines, correct FDX structure. Real-world scripts rarely look like that. Filmustage handles non-standard formats automatically: unconventional scene numbering, mixed formatting, unusual slug structures, and PDFs exported from non-standard tools. No manual reformatting before upload. Yamdu imports Final Draft, PDF, Fountain, and Celtx, but relies on standard formatting to parse and break down the script correctly.
