“To Them, It Was Like Magic”: How UNCSA Students Are Embracing AI with Filmustage
Discover how producer and professor Bob Gosse is making Filmustage an essential part of the UNCSA curriculum — training future filmmakers with tools they’ll actually use.

Producer and director Bob Gosse began his professional journey in the late ’80s, collaborating with his cousin Hal Hartley on indie classics like “The Unbelievable Truth” (1988) and “Trust” (1990). In 1991, he co-founded the renowned independent film company The Shooting Gallery, alongside filmmakers like Michael Almereyda, Nick Gomez, and Whitney Ransick.
Over the decades, Gosse has worn many hats — from producing breakout films like Laws of “Gravity” (1992) and “Hand Gun” (1993), to directing festival-acclaimed features like “Niagara, Niagara” (1998), which earned Robin Tunney the prestigious Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival. His career includes collaborations with Spike Lee, Courtney Love, and Billy Bob Thornton, and contributions to projects like “Slingblade” (1997), “You Can Count on Me” (2000), and “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell “(2009).
Today, Gosse brings that wealth of industry experience to the classroom as a professor of producing at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA).
When Professor Gosse talks about producing, he describes it as “managing complexity.” And if you've ever juggled story value, production schedules, equipment, and editing workflows, you know exactly what that means.
But recently, something shifted in his classroom. Students weren’t just managing complexity — they were getting ahead of it. The secret weapon? Filmustage.
“They uploaded a script, and in minutes it was broken down — cast, props, wardrobe, vehicles, page count, all there. One student literally said, ‘Oh my God, this is magic.’” — Bob Gosse, Producer, Director & Professor at UNCSA

💻 Breaking Old Habits, Building New Tools
For years, UNCSA relied on legacy tools like Movie Magic and EP Scheduling. These were industry standards, but they came with a steep learning curve and significant manual labor. For film students still learning the ropes, these tools often created more friction than flow.
When Bob started looking into how other schools were modernizing their filmmaking curricula, he came across Filmustage. A free trial turned into a classroom experiment.
“I just reached out to the Filmustage team and said, ‘Hey, I teach at a film school — do you offer academic discounts?’” Bob recalls. “They were totally on board. The support was incredible — super fast, friendly, and exactly what we needed.”
He introduced it to his second-year producing students. Within days, they were using the platform to break down scripts, generate call sheets, and plan schedules. The transformation was immediate. Not only did they learn faster, but they felt empowered by how much time they were saving.
“Filmustage really took the drudgery out of the process,” Bob reflects. “All those hours spent manually tagging props and organizing cast — suddenly, they were gone. Even when the AI missed something, the cleanup was quick. It gave students time back they didn’t even know they were missing.”
💡 A Curriculum Pivot and a Valuable Lesson
But a challenge arose when students tried to share their new tool with first-years. A recent curriculum change had condensed the first-year producing course into a single, spring semester, removing foundational lessons in script breakdown and scheduling. As a result, first-years were still using spreadsheets and Google Docs.
“The second-years picked it up fast — they loved it,” Bob explains. “But the first-years were still stuck in Google Sheets. They hadn’t even learned how to break down a script properly yet, so it was a big leap for them.”
The gap in foundational knowledge became clear. As a result, producing instruction was reinstated in the fall semester, and Filmustage is now part of the long-term curriculum plan.
“If they start using Filmustage from day one, it naturally becomes part of their creative process. So by the time they move into the upper years, they’re not scrambling to catch up — they’re growing from a strong foundation,” Bob observes.

✨ Empowering Creativity Through Simplicity
What stood out most wasn’t just the time saved — it was the creative energy students gained. Less time on logistics meant more time refining their storytelling.
“Filmustage removes friction. It lets them do the creative work — not just the paperwork,” Bob emphasizes.
With features like visual synopsis, auto-tagging, call sheet creation, and integrations with Final Draft and Movie Magic, students began to explore the production process more holistically.
“They upload the script, and boom — everything pops out: cast, props, wardrobe,” he says. “To them, it honestly feels like magic.”
🎬 A New Standard in Workflow
Bob sees Filmustage becoming the new standard for his classes. As more students adopt it early on, it becomes their natural production workflow:
He underscores, “What I care about is teaching. This tool makes learning faster and more efficient. And the more they use it, the more they want to bring others into the ecosystem.”
He’s also looking ahead at third- and fourth-year students using Filmustage to build professional-level projects, especially as features like budgeting, cost reports, and advanced collaboration:
“If I can schedule in Filmustage and export to Movie Magic for specific reports — or eventually even create a cost report right in Filmustage — that’s a huge win for producers.”
🎥 Beyond the Classroom: Prepping for the Real World
Bob’s students are already using Filmustage beyond the classroom. Some have integrated it into their own independent productions, others plan to rely on it during senior year thesis films.
“Some of my students straight-up told me, ‘I’m using this for my next film. No question,’” Bob shares. “That’s when you know a tool really works — when they choose it because it actually makes their lives easier.”
With its full-circle pre-production support — from breakdown to budgeting — Filmustage is giving students a real taste of the industry.
🤖 The Bigger Picture: Teaching AI with a Human Touch
Bob Gosse isn’t just a professor. He sits on UNCSA’s AI Planning Committee and helps shape how technology is integrated across the conservatory. And his perspective is clear:
“Some faculty are terrified of AI. Some are curious. And some — like me — are all in,” Bob says candidly. “AI is a tool. It’s not replacing us. It’s helping us think better.”
He adds, “What Filmustage does well is that it gives students agency. They’re not being controlled by the software — they’re using it to do what they want to do: tell great stories.”
He also leads international film collaborations with students from Konrad Wolf Film University in Germany. Those students? Equally curious and excited about Filmustage and its potential.
🚀 Shaping the Future of Film Education
Filmustage is helping shape the next generation of filmmakers at UNCSA. It’s making producing more accessible, workflows more efficient, and storytelling more central to the student experience.
Looking ahead, Bob sees a clear path for how Filmustage can become fully embedded in the program’s workflow:
“If we teach it to the first years, then when they’re crewing the second-year films, the entire workflow lives in Filmustage. And when they graduate? Guess what tool they’ll want to keep using.”
And just like that, managing complexity becomes simpler — and far more creative.
